About

This year’s Transformers Magazine Industry Navigator conference, titled Sustainable Development Strategies for
T&D
took place on April 9-11, 2025 at Raffles Hotel, Dubai, UAE.

The energy transmission and distribution (T&D) sector is currently facing an unprecedented surge in demand for essential equipment like transformers and switchgear. This surge in demand has prompted significant investments in expanding manufacturing capacities within the T&D industry. Traditionally, the industry’s response to rising demand has involved replicating production lines, building new factories, and increasing the workforce. However, this conventional approach may no longer be the most effective or sustainable way forward for the industry. The T&D sector is now grappling with the risks associated with future demand fluctuations, which could lead to overcapacity and another potential downturn. History has shown the dangers of overinvestment, as seen in the post-2008 crisis when the T&D sector experienced a significant collapse after a period of rapid growth. One of the critical risks in expanding manufacturing capacity is the lack of long-term commitment from utilities, affecting overall investment in capacity and technology. The industry is also facing a growing skills gap as many experienced professionals approach retirement, which could exacerbate operational challenges. To navigate these challenges, the industry must explore innovative, sustainable alternatives to meet high demand, rather than relying solely on physical expansion. The conference aims to explore smarter, more sustainable approaches to industrial growth in the T&D sector, focusing on disruptive ideas and innovative strategies.

Stefan Voeten from SGB-SMIT Group Application of Fiber Optic Sensors for Transformer Testing Subtitle: PD Localization During FAT  (READ MORE)

Stefan Voeten - Technical Testing Expert at SGB-SMIT

Abstract

Partial discharges in large power transformers indicate a high risk for failure by breakdown during operation. Occurrence of partial discharges in a transformer during factory acceptance tests are therefore bound by strict limits. If a partial discharge does occur, it must be localized and the defect causing it must be repaired.

The novel acoustic emission (AE) sensors for the OptiFender are fully fiber optic acoustic emission (AE) sensors. They are comparable in sensitivity and functionality with state-of-the-art piezoelectric-based AE sensors [1].

The OptiFender is capable of using up to 32 sensors at once, which significantly cuts down localization time and improves accuracy.

These sensors have been successfully used for localization of partial discharges on large power transformers during factory acceptance testing. This article describes these tests and their results.
