Speaker's bio

Since 2006 the General Director of Micafluid AG, Oil Purification Systems, Switzerland. In this position he is responsible for the marketing and sales activities for the oil treatment and regeneration business of formals ABB Micafil.
He was working thirty years for Micafil Ltd and ABB Switzerland. During his long-time experience in these companies he has held several positions such as chief director for installation of transformer vacuum drying plants, design engineer for vacuum plants, area sales manager and finally product manager for the oil treatment plants. Andreas Gruber has a degree in technical engineering TS from Institute of Technology in Baden, Switzerland. Since 2007 he is a member of the CIGRE.

Workshop Overview:

The reliability of electrical transmission and distribution grid equipment is influenced by a combination of factors ranging from design and materials to supply chain, manufacturing standards, testing, maintenance practices, environmental conditions, and considerations for emerging challenges like cyber threats.

Transformers : The presentation will address in particular the severe stresses applied on transformers during short-circuit, failures in the field and in the laboratory, testing vs calculations and current developments in the Standard for testing.

Switchgear : An overview of the innovations taking place in the MV & HV switchgear forced by environmental needs and upcoming regulations to replace SF6-gas will be presented. There are several requirements to be fulfilled, and consequent challenges faced by these new technologies to perform satisfactorily in the T&D grids. Examples of the available products using these new technologies will also be presented.

Shankar Subramany is currently the Director for Technology & Innovation under KEMA Labs, CESI Group. After receiving his Master’s degree in High Voltage Engineering from the Anna University in Chennai, India. he joined the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bangalore, India and had various roles and responsibilities including construction of the CPRI High Power Laboratory and testing of MV and HV T&D components for short-circuit and switching performance.

From 1998-2013, he worked at ABB, Sweden and was the Manager of the High Power, High Current and Mechanical test laboratories at ABB. During that period he also held the positions such as Chairman of SATS Certification, Member TC17 Swedish Electrotechnical Commission. He is also Member of IEC & IEEE WGs and Chairman of the STL Technical Committee.

Since 2013 he is KEMA Labs, Netherlands and until recently the global BU Director of High Power Laboratories. In addition to participation in the IEC and IEEE WGs, he is currently also the Chairman of the STL Technical Committee.

Seminar Overview:

Transformer testing is essential throughout its lifecycle, from manufacturing to operation in the power grid. However, the purpose, challenges, and tools used vary significantly depending on the environment in which the tests are performed.

• Factory Testing: Design Validation and Functional Verification
  Before a transformer enters operation, it must meet strict quality standards. In a controlled environment, free from interference and with access to specialized infrastructure, tests are conducted to ensure the transformer’s design and reliability.
• On-Site Testing: Maintenance and Transformer Condition Assessment
  Once in operation, transformers are exposed to environmental factors, varying loads, and insulation aging. On-site tests help detect early-stage failures, prevent breakdowns, and optimize maintenance. However, these tests present additional challenges, such as electrical interference, limited space, and restricted power access. Therefore, portable and reliable equipment is required.

 This presentation will explore the key differences between factory and on-site testing, as well as the technological solutions that facilitate both processes and ensure accurate measurements in any environment.

Speaker's bio

Reyes Muñoz is an electrical engineer with a strong background in the power sector, specializing in the maintenance and management of high-voltage substations. He currently serves as a Product Manager at Haefely AG, where he is responsible for multiple key products in transformer testing and diagnostics, including the WA 2293, MIDAS 2881/MIDAS Micro 2883, FRA 5311, and TTR 2796.

Throughout his career, he has developed a solid combination of technical and managerial skills, with expertise in maintenance, project engineering, and electrical testing. His previous experience includes key roles at GE Grid Solutions, where he led international projects in secondary engineering for GIS substations, as well as construction and commissioning coordination. He has also held positions at Grupo Cobra, Red Eléctrica de España, and Indra, gaining extensive experience in maintaining, supervising, and testing high-voltage systems.

Reyes Muñoz holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Universidad Camilo José Cela.

A 3-hour professional seminar focusing on transformer maintenance through prioritized oil testing and the integration of advanced online monitoring devices (DGA and others). The session will equip participants with modern tools and insights to adapt testing practices to the latest transformer technologies, materials, and standards.

Speaker's bio

Marius Grisaru is on a mission to support electrical engineers and transformer owners who maintain and run their priceless assets by carrying out the necessary oil testing and treatment.

He has had more than 31 years of unique experience in global consulting, sampling, carrying out significant insulating oil tests, and transformer diagnosis – from design and energising to post-mortem examination. He is a trained electrician and holds an M.S. in analytical chemistry.

Mr. Grisaru has been publishing columns in Transformers Magazine since 2014 and, in addition. He has authored and co-authored a series of technical articles, IEC standards, CIGRE brochures, and presentations at international conferences on analytical chemistry of insulating oils and DGA.

Power networks of rural remote regions suffering lower power quality than urban regions; in the workshop we will discuss how could automatic voltage regulator improve the power quality based on real projects and studies. In addition, we will discuss using dry type transformers in solar projects and the special design consideration that should be taken into consideration based on real projects and studies.
